Why It's Time to Leave X and How to Do It

Computer and post it note

The social media landscape has shifted dramatically, and for many of us, that means reevaluating our digital footprints. For years, Twitter (now X) was an essential platform for businesses, communities, and individuals to share ideas, amplify voices, and engage in meaningful discussions. However more recently the platform has become a space where toxicity, misinformation, and questionable policies are not only tolerated but seemingly encouraged.

At rTraction, we’ve built a brand on authenticity, inclusivity, and ethical business practices. That’s why we’ve made the decision to leave X and if you’re considering doing the same, here’s what you need to know.

Why You Should Consider Leaving X

  1. Ethical Concerns – The platform’s leadership has repeatedly engaged in behavior that undermines inclusivity, equality, and basic standards of respectful discourse. Many long time users have found themselves questioning whether their participation is indirectly supporting these values.
  2. Security & Privacy Issues – X has experienced a wave of policy changes, including pay-for-verification models and questionable data collection practices. If you’re concerned about your data, it may be time to disconnect.
  3. Declining Engagement & Credibility – The shift in policies, user base, and algorithm changes has made X a less effective tool for businesses and content creators. If your audience is no longer there, why should you be?
  4. Better Alternatives Exist – The digital world has evolved. Platforms like LinkedIn, Mastodon, BlueSky, and Threads offer similar (if not better) engagement opportunities without the ethical baggage.

How to Leave X Safely

If you’ve decided it’s time to move on, here’s how to do it properly:

Back Up Your Data

Before deleting or deactivating your account, download your archive:

  • Go to Settings & Privacy
  • Click Your Account > Download an Archive of Your Data
  • Request your archive and wait for the download link

Communicate Your Exit

Your followers deserve to know where they can find you. Pin a farewell post with links to your other social media profiles and newsletter. Example:

"I’m stepping away from X. You can still connect with me here: [List your links]. Thanks for the memories, and see you elsewhere!"

Secure Your Account

If you don’t want to delete your account but wish to step away, take these precautions:

  • Set your account to private
  • Remove linked third-party apps
  • Change your password to a strong, unique one
  • Enable two-factor authentication

Deactivate or Delete

If you’re ready to delete:

  • Go to Settings & Privacy > Your Account > Deactivate
  • X will hold your account for 30 days before permanent deletion

The Risk of Deleting Your Account: Username Hijacking and Misrepresentation

Deleting your social media account might seem like a clean break, but it comes with an often-overlooked risk someone else could claim your old username and use it to misrepresent you or your brand. Many platforms release usernames back into circulation after an account is deleted, meaning a bad actor could take over your former handle and pretend to be you.

This can be especially damaging for businesses, public figures, or anyone with an established online presence. A new account using your old username could spread misinformation, scam your audience, or tarnish your reputation. Instead of deleting, consider deactivating your account or posting a final message directing followers to your new handle.

Where to Go Next

Leaving X doesn’t mean disconnecting, it means redirecting your energy to better spaces. Here are some great alternatives:

  • LinkedIn – Great for professional networking and industry discussions.
  • Threads – A growing alternative for casual conversations.
  • BlueSky – A decentralized option with a more open, community-driven feel.
  • Mastodon – Federated and ad-free, ideal for meaningful engagement.
